Rastući broj pretilosti, dijabetesa i srčanih bolesti uglavnom su posljedica nezdrave prehrane. Svježe voće i povrće, te neprerađena hrana najzdraviji su po naš organizam. Moderni gradovi trebali bi sačuvati svoje tržnice umjesto porasta broja fast-food restorana. Upute Dr.Pollan nudi nekoliko jednostavnih uputa za zdravu prehranu:
1. Ne jedite ništa što vaša baka ne bi prepoznala kao hranu. Umjetno prerađena hrana obično ima nisku energetsku vrijednost. 2. Ne jedite ništa što sadrži više od 5 sastojaka koje ne poznajete. Dodaci hrani u vidu umjetnih boja, konzervansa i drugi smanjuju nutritivnu vrijednost. 3. Kupujte na rubovima supermarketa gdje stoji voće i povrće, a izbjegavajte srednji dio gdje stoji prerađene namirnice. 4. Ne jedite hranu koja ne trune jer to znači da je obrađena konzervansima koji umjetno produžuju rok trajanja. 5. Ne jedite do sitosti nego do ¾ punoće budući signal sitosti iz želuca do mozga stiže se zakašnjenjem od nekoliko minuta. 6. Jedite u društvu ljudi koje volite, sa svojom obitelji, prijateljima ili kolegama na poslu umjesto pred TV ili PC. 7. Ne kupujte hranu na benzinskim stanicama jer turbulencije u vožnji otežavaju probavu. Mitovi Dr.Pollan također navodi nekoliko uobičajenih mitova u vezi prehrane:
