Životna priča o siromašnom mladiću koji od najlošijeg učenika osnovne škole uz pomoć majke i njene vjere upisuje medicinu. Njegova samohrana majka sa dvojicom sinova i sama se dodatno školuje, te od spremačice postaje krojačica. U međuvremenu Ben diplomira medicinu i postaje liječnik-neurokirurg. Pri tome nastoji savladati i školsko gradivo i slabosti svog karaktera. Zapošljava se u poznatoj "Johns Hopkins" bolnici i preuzima sve zahtjevnije slučajeve. Sa 30 godina postaje voditelj odjela i usavršava se u operacijama blizanaca. Po završetku kirurške prakse, počinje se baviti politikom i postaje senator.
